Accessibility statement
This site should work for everyone. If it does not work for you, I want to know.
The goal
I aim for this site to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, level AA. It is a small, static site with plain text and a few images, which makes that realistic, but I am one person and I will miss things.
What is built in
- Every page works with a keyboard alone, has a “Skip to main content” link, and shows a clear focus outline.
- Pages use proper landmarks and heading order so screen readers can navigate them.
- Text and background colors are checked automatically against WCAG AA contrast ratios in every color theme.
- Images have text descriptions, and photo credits are plain text, not part of the image.
- The site works without JavaScript. Nothing is hidden behind scripts, and animations never carry meaning.
- Layouts reflow down to a narrow phone width and zoom up to 400% without sideways scrolling.
- No cookies, no tracking, no pop-ups, no autoplaying media.
Options you can change
The “Reading preferences” button in the footer opens a panel where you can choose:
- a color palette, and light, dark, or matching your device;
- standard or high contrast;
- text size from small to extra large, and roomier text spacing;
- to reduce or allow animation;
- an alternative typeface, Atkinson Hyperlegible, designed for readability.
Your choices are saved only in your own browser, never sent anywhere. The site also follows your device's own settings for dark mode, higher contrast, and reduced motion unless you override them.
How it has been checked
- Automated scans with the axe accessibility engine.
- Keyboard-only walkthroughs of every page type.
- Contrast ratios checked by script for every color theme.
It has not yet been audited by an outside specialist. Last reviewed: October 2026.
Known limitations
- Some pale accent colors (the sand and copper highlights in a few light palettes) are used only for decoration and are never relied on to convey information.
- Links to external sites, such as music or chess game pages, are not under my control.
